Odd Fellows Take Down the Flags – A Quiet Tradition in the Early MorningSt. Helena, CA — July 5, 2026
In the peaceful early hours of July 5th, while most of St. Helena was still asleep, members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows were already quietly at work.Just as they proudly placed the American flags throughout town before the 4th of July, the Odd Fellows returned in the calm darkness to carefully take them down.
The streets were quiet and the town had a special, peaceful beauty — the soft glow of streetlights reflecting off the empty sidewalks, with only the occasional sound of an early bird or distant rooster breaking the silence.
This early-morning task is a long-standing tradition for the lodge. It’s a humble but meaningful way the Odd Fellows continue to serve the community — putting up the flags with pride and taking them down with care and respect once the celebration has passed.
“Thank you to all our members who came out in the early hours,” said Brother Gold. “St. Helena looks especially beautiful and serene at that time of morning. It’s a special feeling to be out serving our town while the rest of the community rests.”
The flags have now been safely stored until next year, but the spirit of patriotism and community service remains strong in the hearts of the Odd Fellows.
